The Buy bet works the same way as the Place bet, except that you must pay a tax or a vigorish to get true odds. A Buy bet can also be placed on a different layout. The Buy bet has the same rules as the Place bet.
Casinos are in business to make money. They won’t give you true odds for free (except the true Odds bet you can add to your Pass Line–they’re free because you don’t need to pay a Vigorish). How does the casino make money when they pay off a Buy wager at true odds? True odds is a bet that has no house advantage. Are you ready to be screwed yet again? They tax you! That is what you believe? Tax! For the privilege to have true odds, you must pay. This tax is known as a “vigorish” or “vig”.
John Winn is the father and founder of modern craps. Gambling halls could offer more friendly bets for a 5% fee in Winn’s version of the game. The gambling halls were unable to make a profit on true odds bets. However, they made money due to the 5% tax. They soon began to refer to the additional charge as “vigorish” because it brought in so much cash that they called it giving vigor their profits. Today, the Vig is 5%.
Place your bets on the 4, 9, and 10 to get a better return than placing the 4 or 10. Place bets on the 5 or 9 are better than putting the 5 or 9, depending on when the Vig is paid. But placing bets on the 6 or 8 is always better than buying the 6 or 8.
Why is a Buy bet on 4 or 10 better than a place bet on 4 or 10? Let’s say you place a $10 Place wager on the 4.
The Place odds are 9 to 5, meaning you will win $18 for every $10 bet ($10 divided by 5 = $2, multiplied by 9 = $18). Instead of placing a bet on the Place, let’s say you place a $10 Buy wager and pay $1 vig to get true odds of 2:1. A $10 Buy bet on 4 will win you $20, but you have to pay $1 vig for a $1 net payoff. Comparing the results, you will see the Place winning bet nets $18 and the Buy winning bet nets $19.
As your bet amounts increase, the Buy bet will get better. For example, let’s say you place a $25 bet on the 10 and win $45 (Place odds of 9:5). For true odds of 2:1, let’s say you place a $25 Buy Bet and pay $1 vig. A $25 Buy bet on 10 wins you $50, but you have to pay $1 vig for a $49. The net payoff is $49. Comparing the results, you will see that the winning $25 Place bet nets $45 while the winning $25 Buy bet nets $49.
The Vig for the $25 Buy Bet is $1. For a $25 Buy Bet, the 5% vig works out to $1.25. However, the casino doesn’t usually have chips worth less than $1, so the Vig is reduced. A vig with a fraction less than 50c is rounded down. Vigs with a fraction more than 50c are rounded up. For example, a $50 buy bet will result in a $2 vig, even though the 5% of $50 equals $2.50. Some casinos will only allow you to keep a little of your profit. Let’s say you place two $50 Buy bets simultaneously. (E.g., $100 is dropped in the Come box. The dealer will tell you to “Buy the four or ten for fifty dollars each.” Instead of charging $4 for each bet (i.e. $2 for each $50 chance), you may be charged $5 vig by the casino (i.e. $2.50 per $50 Buy bet).
The Vig is usually only charged by casinos once you win your bet. Some casinos require you to pay the vig upfront when you place your bet. You must deposit $11 to place a $10 Buy Bet on the 4 with an upfront vig. You will need to pay $10 for your bet and $1 for the Vig. $11 is lost if the shooter rolls 7s. To attract customers, many casinos require that you pay the Vig once your bet is won. You only need to deposit $10 for a $10 Buy Bet on the 4, with an after-win Vig. If you win, the dealer will pay you $19 (i.e. $20 for the win plus $1 for the Vig). The house advantage is lower if the payment of the Vig follows the success. This makes the Buy bet even more attractive.
My experience shows that vigs are usually paid after a win if there is a choice of casinos. If the casino is the only one in town, vigs will be paid upfront. It is because of competition. You can leave a casino you like and walk to another one. If the casino is the only one in the area, they will take you by the balls and charge the Vig up front. Drop your chips into the Come box, and tell the dealer what number you would like to make a Buy wager. The dealer will then move your chips to the parcel in a location that corresponds with your table position (similar to Place bets) and place a BUY button. The button informs the camera and boxman that you are Buying the number, not Placing it.
Some dealers will automatically buy the bet for the inexperienced player and place it when it’s to their advantage. Let’s say the guy in front of you places a $25 bet on the 10. You notice that the dealer moves the $25 chip into the box at 10 points and puts a BUY button. You don’t know that the dealer could give you an additional $4 if your bet wins. A winning $25 Buy bet nets $49, while a winning $25 Place bet nets only $40).
The best place to place a Buy bet is on the 4 or 10. If the casino allows the payment of the Vig after a win, it may be more advantageous for the 5 or 9. If you place a $50 Place wager on the 5, where the Place odds for the 5 are 7:5, you will win $70 ($50 divided by $5 = $10, multiplied 7 = $70). Instead of placing a place bet, you can make a $50 Buy wager and pay $2 vig to get true odds of 3:2. A $50 Buy bet on 5 will win you $75. ($50 divided by 2 = $25. Multiply that by 3 = $75). However, you must pay $2 vig for a $73 net payoff. The winning $50 Place bet nets $70, while the winning $50 Buy bet nets $73. Placing the 5, 9, or 9 bets is better than buying them. The house advantage is lower, at 4.00% for placing the 5 or 9, and 4.76% for buying them with an upfront vig.
For the 6 and 8, the Buy Bet needs to be smarter. Instead of buying them, you should always place the 6 and 8. Let’s look at the numbers. We know that Place bets on the 6 and 8 must be made in multiples $6 to receive the full 7:6 Place odds. Buy bets must be placed on the 6 and 8 multiples of $5 to obtain the true odds. If you place a $96 bet on the 6 and win, you will win $112. ($96 divided by 6 = $16, multiplied with 7 = $112). Instead of placing a place bet on the 6, you can make a $95 Buy wager and pay $5 vig when you win. This will give you true odds. A $95 Buy bet on 6 wins you $114 ($95 divided by 5 = $19, multiplied six times = $114), but the $5 vig costs you $109, which gives you a net payout of $109. The winning $96 Place bet nets $112, while the $95 winning Buy bet nets $109. A Place bet is more profitable than a buy bet for the 6-8. Place bets on the 6 or 8 are less than Buy bets, regardless of whether the Vig is paid upfront or after a win.
